Janet Long

Professional Bio

Dr Long PhD, MN, BSc (Hons1) is an implementation scientist and health systems researcher whose innovative work uses the theories of complex systems, socio-professional networks, and behaviour change to sustainably implement research into clinical practice. Based at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, she co-leads the Complex Systems and Implementation Science Research stream. She has a clinical background as a registered Nurse (16 years). Her last clinical role was as CNC at Sydney Hospital Sydney Eye Hospital.
 
In the field of implementation science, Dr Long’s team elucidated their innovative approach in When Complexity Science meets Implementation Science, described by the BMC Med editor as “paradigm-shifting”. Her Four systems enablers paper in Milbank Quarterly distils learnings from a realist evaluation of the implementation of Leading Better Value care initiatives across New South Wales health facilities. 
 
Dr Long co-led the Implementation Science streams on Australian Genomics and Mackenzie’s Mission and now leads an MRFF grant Embedding Genomics in Primary Care.
 
Dr Long uses implementation science frameworks such as CFIR and TDF complemented by tools such as social network analysis, rich graphics and process mapping to grapple with the complexity of contexts.
